MMORPG : EVE Evolved: The cost of failureBy: Brendan Drain

The harsh death penalty in EVE Online is something that's talked about a lot. I even touched on the issue myself when I compared EVE Online's style of PvP to Age of Conan and when I investigated the phenomenon of suicide ganking. In EVE, your ship being destroyed means millions of your hard-earned isk is flushed down the drain. If you're unlucky enough not to get away in your escape pod, you'll be killed and recloned, costing yet more isk and destroying any expensive implants in your head. The brutal death penalty associated with PvP in EVE is responsible for putting a lot of players off playing the game but is the taste of death really as bitter as people make it out to be?
In this article, I examine the cost of defeat in PvP and how to minimise these costs without ruining your PvP performance.Continue reading EVE Evolved: The cost of failure Comments
MMORPG : Factors that could make or break WAR's longterm successBy: James Egan
Oct 12, 2008 04:00:00 PM News Item: 5772
Filed under: Fantasy, Expansions, MMO industry, Warhammer Online, Opinion Syp over at the Waaagh! Warhammer Online blog looks at the title's 750,000 registered players figure and observes that merely buying the box (or the download) shouldn't necessarily imply that monthly subscription dollars will follow. There are a number of factors involved that will determine how well Warhammer Online does in the long run. There's no doubt that WAR is enjoying its time in the limelight -- even lukewarm reviews of the title still give it decent ratings, not to mention the hardcore contingent of players who are either fans of the IP or simply love that it's not World of Warcraft. But are many of these registered players only in WAR for the time being?
Syp writes about this in his "Future Tense" post, and breaks down the factors that could make or break the title's success in the long run, not limited to the upcoming expansions from other titles, word of mouth, and the longshot of breaking the pop culture barrier, as WoW has.

MMORPG : You probably didn't need that Second Life account anywayBy: Tateru Nino
Oct 12, 2008 03:00:00 PM News Item: 5776
Filed under: News items, Second Life We feel a little odd about this one. Not because we're giving you a warning about a scam to steal your Second Life account information, but because you'd have to be just a bit retarded and greedy to fall for this ... or maybe just unsophisticated and ignorant would be enough. Certainly a level far below our regular discerning and informed Massively readers.
Nonetheless, some people are going to fall for this. Some people always do -- and it is a very convincing copy of one of the Second Life Web-pages. Remember, though, the only Web-sites that legitimately prompt for your Second Life password are at secondlife.com. If you think win-lindens.tk could be an official Second Life website, think again.
So, here's the drill. Feel free to sing along:
- If you give your account details to any third-party, regardless of the proffered incentive, you should probably cancel your account -- because heaven knows, they can lock you out of it and keep it, or do whatever the heck they want with it.
- If you ever get the urge to do so, because someone is offering you EXP, game-gold, Linden Dollars, free items, or whatever, go find someone responsible to talk you out of it. That would be pretty much anyone else.
- Short version: No. No, no, no, no, no.
Got all that? Odds are, dear readers, that if you're here reading this then you aren't one of the poor unfortunates who really needs this advice.
The offending site (which we'll not grace with a link) is http://www.win-lindens.tk/ which is using one free Web-host in Amsterdam, and another in Italy for their nefarious deeds. We wouldn't be surprised if it was the same people that were behind freelindensnow.

MMORPG : One Shots: The carnage of WARBy: Krystalle Voecks
Oct 12, 2008 02:00:00 PM News Item: 5781
Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Warhammer Online, One Shots
In the rumble of battle in Warhammer Online, some triumph -- others fall. The wounded are tended, and the sacrifices of the fallen are acknowledged with a grim nod. Today's One Shots comes to us from Snacky of Iron Rock, who came across this scene while traveling around. Snacky writes: As my White Lion was riding through some hills, I came upon this poor unfortunate dwarf who appeared to have been axed in the back. How sad. He didn't even get a chance to fire off a shot with dignity! Perhaps not, but someone seems to have avenged him!
If you've found something interesting, cool, or strange, grab a screenshot and send it to us here! We're always on the hunt for more One Shots. Just send it to oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your character name/server/guild and a quick description of what we're seeing. We'll post your screens and give you full credit for it. %Gallery-9798%

MMORPG : CoX Lead Dev to rattle the d20s for charityBy: Adrian Bott
Oct 12, 2008 01:00:00 PM News Item: 5771
Filed under: Super-hero, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Events, real-world, MMO industry Most City of Heroes players know that many of their Devs love good old fashioned pen-and-paper RPGs. They've chimed in on mechanics discussions and discussed the games they run. Now, as part of HeroCon, lead CoX developer Matt 'Positron' Miller is going to be donning his Dungeon Master hat to run a select group of players through a Dungeons and Dragons scenario. It's all in a good cause, with proceeds going to Scare for a Cure.
Matt's raising said proceeds by auctioning off the six seats in the game, with bids starting at $49.99. He'll be setting up the DM's screen at 8:00 pm PST on Friday, October 17, 2008, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Santa Clara, California - the venue for HeroCon, of course. And Matt will be using the slick new 4th Edition rules, so we won't be seeing any multiclassed dual wield spiked chain half-dragon-half-unicorn characters. Comments
MMORPG : EVE's spies and metagamersBy: James Egan
Oct 12, 2008 12:00:00 PM News Item: 5774
Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Culture, Forums, Game mechanics, Guilds, PvP, Opinion, Politics EVE Online is one of the few MMOs where players in guilds (corporations and alliances) have some valid concerns about spies from rival groups infiltrating their ranks. The concept of being a spy or saboteur is a profession of sorts that arose in the game. There aren't any game mechanics that necessarily enable spying or make it into a viable profession, nor are there any rules that prohibit most of these activities.
Wes from EVE Tribune recently wrote a piece called "Metagaming", dealing with how espionage can impact rival corporations and alliances in EVE. Wes asks, "Why is everyone so paranoid about spies and metagaming?" then goes on to explain how espionage in EVE works, categorizing spies by their modus operandi:Continue reading EVE's spies and metagamers Comments
MMORPG : How your Bartle Type influences your WAR class choiceBy: Shawn Schuster
Oct 12, 2008 11:00:00 AM News Item: 5780
Filed under: Fantasy, Classes, Culture, Warhammer Online, Academic
A few weeks ago, gamerDNA made a push to get 500k gamers to take the Bartle test located on their site. Not only did they crush that number, but they've put the statistics to good use. In an interesting research article by Sanya Weathers (who was just recently on the Massively speaking podcast), you'll notice some fascinating results combining the Bartle Type of gamers as it pertains to their Warhammer Online class choice.
First off, this article shows the interesting distribution of class choices in WAR (from the people with that information in their gamerDNA profiles). Then that information is broken down to show gender preference per class and ultimately the Bartle Type in relation to each class. The entire article is certainly a worthwhile read, and says a lot about the balance of the game's classes and how the game can appeal to as many people as it has. Hopefully, as hinted in the article, gamerDNA will do research like this for other popular MMOs in the future.

MMORPG : New EVE Online video advances backstoryBy: James Egan
Oct 11, 2008 08:00:00 PM News Item: 5773
Filed under: Sci-fi, Video, EVE Online, Lore, Races Fans of EVE Online's backstory will want to see CCP's latest video tied into the game's lore. The two previous videos CCP Games released were linked to the events that unfolded in The Empyrean Age novel, as broadcast by The Scope news agency: 'Alexander Noir's' suicide attack obliterating hopes for peace between the Gallente and Caldari races, and the unified showing of Minmatar strength that served as a threat to those who would hinder their race's pursuit of freedom.
The latest video, from Amarr Certified News, shows the full might of the Amarr Imperial Domain Fleet, with a multitude of Avatar titans and Revelation dreadnaughts arrayed in elaborate formation, heralding the arrival of their newly coronated Empress, Jamyl Sarum. Having successfully navigated her way to the top while usurping her formidable adversaries, Empress Jamyl Sarum's rise to prominence establishes her as, quite possibly, the most powerful individual in New Eden. All of New Eden witnesses her broadcast, and hears her proclaim, "I am the harbinger of hope. I am the sword of the righteous. And to all who hear my words, I say this: What you give to this Empire, I shall give back unto you." While the theocratic Amarr will operate under some new guiding principles through her rule, it's clear that the Reclamation will proceed, and world after world will come under her control as she 'saves all those wayward children, from themselves.' You can view the video footage of Empress Jamyl Sarum's coronation speech after the cut, as she ushers in a new age for the Amarr race, and for New Eden itself.Continue reading New EVE Online video advances backstory Comments
MMORPG : Chinese gamer sued for using WoW add-onBy: Shawn Schuster
Oct 11, 2008 07:00:00 PM News Item: 5770
Filed under: World of Warcraft, Fantasy, Business models, Culture, Events, real-world, MMO industry, Politics
What if World of Warcraft had no add-ons, would you still play? Worse yet, what if they had the add-ons, and you were aware of them, but it was actually illegal to use them? That's the state of the game in China right now, thanks to the country's licensed WoW distributor, The9.
As part of The9's ongoing war against add-ons, they introduced anti-plugin software in 2004, and have threatened to close down any accounts that circumvented that software. In fact, the company just recently won a lawsuit that stemmed from a player who got their account closed when they were shown to use an add-on. In an article discussing this subject over at Virtually Blind, they suggest a server made just for add-ons, for anyone who wishes to participate. Taking into consideration the fact that China would probably never allow this, what are your thoughts?
EDIT: It seems there was some confusion in the original article's translation, attributing legal add-ons to illegal plug-ins or hacking software. Our apologies for the misunderstanding in quoting the Virtually Blind article, and thank you to all who pointed this out. Comments
MMORPG : The sport of WAR's RvRBy: Shawn Schuster
Oct 11, 2008 06:00:00 PM News Item: 5779
Filed under: Fantasy, Game mechanics, PvP, Warhammer Online, Opinion
As a game that has promoted its PvP aspects so much, Warhammer Online's Realm vs Realm feature has become a big hit among players. In a recent article over at Eurogamer, they analyze the sport aspect of WAR's RvR system, and what makes it different from the PvP in other MMOs.
This article touches on many key points, including collision detection, control point logistics and more. However, this article is not simply another praise-fest. On the subject of what Mythic got right or wrong in RvR: "Right: always ensuring you've got something fast, satisfying and combat-centric to achieve, with none of the waiting around and grinding of... well, I won't bring up That Other Game here. Wrong: guarding capture points for a set number of seconds, or running a flag to specific spots to score points is so inescapably gamey, so artificial."

MMORPG : A look at Cultural Armor in Age of ConanBy: Adrian Bott
Oct 11, 2008 04:00:00 PM News Item: 5767
Filed under: Fantasy, Age of Conan, Culture, Crafting, Races
Age of Conan has been (in our view, fairly) criticized for lacking costume diversity. It's not quite Age of Strikingly Similar If Slightly Recolored Leather, but it's close. The huge revamp to the crafting system that was recently announced will do a lot to fix this, adding new crafting recipes for armor sets including the Cultural Armor sets.
We had initially thought that the 'cultures' mentioned would be the three in the game currently - Aquilonian, Cimmerian and Stygian - but a recent feature on the new sets has added Acheronian to the list. It's accompanied by a lengthy piece of background text concerning niello, a substance that does exist in the real world, and will presumably appear in Age of Conan as a crafting material.
The whole piece, however, is clearly a FunCom addition to the work of Robert E Howard, and while it's inevitable that the canon would have to be expanded upon in order to flesh out the game, we can't help but raise an eyebrow at a chronicle by 'Lascivicus' that mentions 'Deathcoils' and 'the Dark Lord'. A bit too black metal, perhaps. And Lascivicus? Come on, Funcom. The Bearded Clam was bad enough, but let's steer cleer of the silly NPC names, eh?

MMORPG : The Escapist introduces The Virtual Policy NetworkBy: Tateru Nino
Oct 11, 2008 03:00:00 PM News Item: 5768
Filed under: Culture, MMO industry, Politics, Legal, Virtual worlds
The Escapist is carrying a deliciously cogent piece from multimedia writer Wendy Despain, tantalizingly entitled Legislating the Virtual World. In it, she introduces The Virtual Policy Network, founded by Ren Reynolds to help governments, universities and businesses mediate their interests in online worlds. The Virtual Policy Network includes such names as Richard Bartle, Mia Consalvo, Randy Farmer, Thomas Malaby, Jessica Mulligan, and David Pullinger. The issues in virtual environments, however, may be at once simpler and more complex than they appear on the surface.
'As an example, consider how landlord laws might apply to virtual worlds. If it's assumed the "residents" are renting their virtual space from the people who make and maintain the game, does banning a player equate to evicting them from an apartment?,' writes Despain, 'Now consider the fact that landlord laws vary from city to city, not just internationally, and you have an idea of how complex a simple account ban can become with a little creative litigation.'
However, we'll defer to the combined wisdom of Belgian surrealist painter Réné Magritte and philosopher, historian, intellectual and sociologist Michel Foucault, who more accurately stated, Ceçi n'est pas une pipe. Continue reading The Escapist introduces The Virtual Policy Network Comments

Attendees can expect a fan art contest to enter drawings and sculptures into as well as a costume contest. MMORPG : High level content adjustments in latest WAR hotfixBy: Kyle Horner
Oct 11, 2008 12:00:00 PM News Item: 5778
Filed under: Patches, Warhammer Online, News items
Mythic is tweaking and adding to the endgame content in Warhammer Online. Experience gain in tiers 3 and 4 are being increased and brand new quests are being added. This is only the beginning of experience changes, according to Mythic. These aren't the only alterations to the endgame experience, however. Fortress Lords and contested city guards have been made more challenging and because of this, armor sets have been modified to help players deal with their newly acquired combat tenacity.
This looks like the opening salvo of streamlining updates from Mythic. Whatever they're feeding the development team seems to be working, because it seems like every few days we've got another relevant hot-fix to report. Chances are that the first major content update for Warhammer Online will blow a dwarf-sized hole in our collective minds when it's announced. Check beyond the cut for the detail info you may be seeking.Continue reading High level content adjustments in latest WAR hotfix Comments

Sometimes, just sometimes, words aren't enough to express a person's love for any particular game. In cases where your fan-cup overfloweth, we often recommend playing your favorite tracks from the franchise/game of your choice. While the music is rocking you are to dance around fervently, making jazz-hands and other increasingly faux-street maneuvers until the music finishes. If after this display of (assumed) exceptionally powerful fan dancing you remain wholly unembarrassed, well you know what to do next: dress up like characters from the game!
At this year's BlizzCon, we're treated with some fairly impressive pictures of cosplayers thanks to WoW Insider's diligent camera-pointy-clicking (industry term) throughout day one of the event. And while some pictures are more ... akward ... than others, you'll be pleasantly surprised by quite a few. Check 'em out in the gallery below.

Crubz is standing on my screen with a choppa in one hand and a blocka in the other, waiting for me to select him and log into Warhammer Online for some RvR action. My cursor glides onto the "character" button. I'd feel bad for what I'm about to do if it didn't seem so right. I stare into the load screen for Blighted Isle and wonder if I'll come to regret my penultimate choice -- the career I truly want isn't available to me, yet. I doubt that I ever will regret the decision because it's going to happen again. Regret will only rear its ugly head if I don't take at least one character to end game level. My Dark Elf Sorcerer is nearly level ten now with a renown rank of eight and my class hopping has only just begun.Continue reading The Digital Continuum: WAR's resistant early gratifitanktion Comments
